Testing time for EMC
Article Abstract:
Pera International and BSI Testing have developed a simple, low-cost cell for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) tests which can be used by small companies as these tests are cheaper and do not require highly skilled staff. EMC tests are costly and need skilled and qualified staff, which makes it difficult for small companies to carry out the tests. Essential requirements for the test include a portable unit called a GTEM (gigahertz transverse electromagnetic mode) cell, originally developed by ABB. The new method is not as accurate as traditional methods of testing EMC, but can still be used and improved. The GTEM project will continue for three years and may involve 10 other companies besides Pera and BSI Testing.

L'autre cote de la Manche
Article Abstract:
More UK engineers have applied for and received the Eur Ing title than from the rest of Europe combined. Nine thousand UK engineers hold the international engineer title compared to 4,000 of their Continental brethren, perhaps because engineering has so little cachet at home. The CEng title is also not known in Europe, so Eur Ing avoids confusion. The title requires a diploma from an accredited program and at least two years' relevant experience.
