The anvil of evolution
Article Abstract:
The author presents a new theory on the physiological mechanisms of evolution, in which marginal environments account for the majority of successful adaptations. He posits that marginal environments, or those with fewer resources and less stable climates, offer more challenges to survival, and therefore drive more genetic changes to ensure survivability than do habitats with more resources and climatic stability.

The gene machine
Article Abstract:
An overview is presented on research being performed in the rain forests of Ecuador to determine evolutionary causation of species diversity. Findings generally support the theory that a high degree of biodiversity is linked to greater solar energy levels, climate stability and geographically large habitats.

The case of the missing migrants
Article Abstract:
A switch from shade-grown coffee in Latin American to high-yield full-sun varieties may be linked to the depletion of North American songbird populations. Hundreds of birds species winter in coffee plantations under tall canopies, since much natural-forest habitat has already disappeared.
