The application of advanced information technology in medicine and health care: a European approach
Article Abstract:
Europe's hospitals have a series of problems which they must resolve through changing the way they share information in the health fields. Hospitals must make their networks more efficient. Doctors making medical decisions must have adequate access to patients' records, drug histories, procedure histories and equipment availability. Transmission of signals must be of high quality. Health care data must be standardized for use throughout Europe. Multimedia technology will allow distant consultations, exchange of patient information, technological advances and research collaboration.

The ESPRIT of a European R&D network
Article Abstract:
The European Community formed a program in 1984 for coordinating members R&D efforts in the information technology field, which was called ESPRIT. Its intention was to encourage cooperation between companies across national borders, encourage partnerships and mutual investment, and develop a plan for development in the future. ESPRIT helped create a model of cooperation between government and private organizations, and also created a model for beneficial competition. It also managed to focus industry's priorities on information issues of mutual importance.

The epistemological and ethical basis of risk assessment in advanced technological systems: the lesson of the 'Challenger.'
Article Abstract:
The explosion of the Challenger space shuttle in 1985 could have been avoided if management had paid attention to two stern warnings from one engineer in 1978 and in 1985 that a field joint design was so gravely deficient it could produce catastrophic failures including the loss of human life. The Challenger disaster is a prime example of decision making where safety is not the first priority. It demonstrates the fact that many accidents and disasters might have been avoided if safety was accepted as a top decision making priority.
