Article Abstract:
A philosopher from a Muslim family describes his time at a Malaysian Islamic university and the reasons why he can no longer support Islam. Shabbir Akhtar was a passionate defender of Islam when living as part of the Muslim minority in England, but was challenged by the life he found at the International Islamic University in Malaysia. The University opposed intellectual curiosity and examination of the Muslim faith. It was also constantly in the the grip of sectarian rivalry, accompanied by accusations of heresy.

Penn State materials science researchers Thomas Shrout and Seung-Eek Park are developing a promising piezoelectric material. The key to Shrout and Park's research, which could have broad commercial application, is the addition of lead-titanate to the traditional piezoelectric ceramic PZT.

Aklilu Lemma's important discovery on the potential of the endod berry for curing schistosomiasis has been put down before it can even be applied. Bureaucracy and the selfish interests of some scientists and officials have prevented the people from benefitting from Lemma's work.
