Researchers hope to preserve China's indigenous Buddhist traditions and language through meticulous documentation of rituals. The Dai language used in religious observances is directly connected to cultural identity, with nuances not contained in other dialects. Sociopolitical changes in China pose a threat to native Buddhism, which could sever commonalities between other Buddhist nations such as Thailand.
