The energy system
Article Abstract:
Several environmental problems center around the use of fossil fuels. Future research and development, therefore, should focus on projects that will remove the dependency of our energy system upon the use of fossil fuels. Exploration is recommended on topics such as how to increase the use of electricity and renewable energy resources, the safety and disposal of nuclear power-generating plants, and the potential of hydrogen as an alternative source of energy. Despite the emphasis on "defossilizing" energy resources, efforts should also be channeled to improving efficiency and emissions of coal plants and automobiles.

Economics and research assessment
Article Abstract:
Environmental benefits, in comparison to the costs of implementing regulations to reduce risks, is currently being questioned. The inadequacy of the cost-benefit analytical tools available to decision makers regarding quantitative environmental risk assessment and the uncertain value attached to the benefits resulting from regulation implementation has made the process more difficult. Interdisciplinary research in the 21st century, therefore, should focus on improving and facilitating analytical tools and developing alternatives.
