The impact of convergent and divergent technological and market strategies on core competencies and core rigidities: an exploratory study
Article Abstract:
The market and technological strategies of 10 business units that are global leaders in innovation in their respective sectors are examined. The relationships between these strategies and the business units' core competencies and core rigidities are also explored. This was done by classifying the strategies as either convergent or divergent, after which the effects of these strategies were linked to long-range technological and market objectives of the businesses profiled. These businesses include, among others, GE Medical Systems, Apple Computer, MapInfo and Corning.

Convergent and divergent technological and market strategies for global leadership
Article Abstract:
Market dominance may be a matter of the company's mix of its technological and market strategies. The mix may be classified either as convergent or divergent, depending on how the strategies are utilized to service market demands or in marketing the company's product lines. Divergent strategies seek to expand the availability of a company products into markets or differentiating technology to service several requirements. Convergent strategies seek to funnel market demand into a single supplier or accumulate technology to produce a superior product.

Innovation in the 'Baby Bell' companies: a comparative longitudinal analysis
Article Abstract:
A case investigation involving seven 'Baby Bells', which were established by a 1984 court order, revealed a positive relationship between patent acquisition and joint development. The same kind of relationship was also established between introduction of new services and joint development. On the other hand, a negative relationship was found to exist between patent acquisition and inter-firm linkages.
