Article Abstract:
The manufacturing industry has changed over the past 10 years or so, with companies contracting out in-house R&D facilities and industrial design becoming a further resource on which companies can draw. Many industrial design practices were forced to added qualified engineers to their team and companies now contract experts to deal with certain aspects. The typical client profile has also changed and industrial designers are increasingly having to work for clients with no manufacturing expertise at all.

Companies are seeking financial benefits from green policies. The government is committed to cuts in CO2 emissions of 20% by 2010 and the Climate Change Levy will help to implement this, however it has been labelled the business energy tax. Sainsbury's Millennium Store on the Greenwich peninsula seeks to reduced its energy consumption by 50%, and BP is strongly promoting its green image by developing products that are biodegradable and less damaging to the environment
