Traction man
Article Abstract:
The increasing popularity of CAD systems in engineering design offices has created a need for engineers with new skills. The buoyant CAD industry has provided jobs for engineers with the ability to implement and support CAD packages used by other industries. One such engineer is Jeremy Hines who took advantage of a CAD course run jointly by the University of Salford and GEC Traction. By the end of the project, Hines was taken on as a full-time development engineer by GEC Traction, where he progressed to become its CAD manager.

Pipe dreams
Article Abstract:
UK-based BG Technology has developed two technologies for inspecting and repairing gas pipes. The first are magnetic detection devices called pigs which move inside pipe sections to record the conditions of pipes. The second is the prototype in-pipe robot which can replace service connections in polyethylene lined pipes. The robot is a modular system featuring a tractor unit which pulls a train of modules for specific tasks.
