Trade wars: Internet business for manufacturers has already arrived

The Internet e-commerce business-to-business market is set to reach over $1 trillion by 2002, dramatically overtaking business-to-consumer web investments. While the manufacturing industry has been slow to adopt the new technology, a wide range of opportunities is emerging for Internet-based business and information sharing. Swedish bearings supplier SKF is pioneering Endorsia.com, an Internet-based intranet network for industrial goods and services which has been rolled-out to 37 distributors in Finland and will be expanded to other European countries.

Few new ideas produced by research organisations, universities and others become translated into products and support for technology transfer is often ineffective, according to a study by Dr Jeremy Holland of the London-based Centre for Exploitation of Science and Technology (CEST).
