Article Abstract:
Gene Mullins has devised a way to cut employees' commuting distance, time and expenses along with stress and tardiness, as well as help reduce carbon dioxide and hydrocarbon emissions. Through the Proximate Commute Mapper software, employees can mix and match their various locations to come up with mutually advantageous moves. The computer-based 'proximate commuting' program will help employers and employees make more logical siting choices. When tested at 30 Key Bank branches, the program reduced average commute by 17%, making each participating employee cut their commute expenses and time by an average of $2,626 and 216 hours, respectively. A few firms in Seattle, WA, are planning to adopt the system.

Monorail: back to the future
Article Abstract:
The monorail is staging a comeback in the 1990s after being regelated in amusement parks. Its biggest supporter is the city of Seattle, WA, which has approved a 42-mile monorail system to serve its residents. Salt Lake City, UT, and Covington, KY, also have plans to build their own systems. In Japan, where space is a premium, there are already 8 monorails in operation. Monorails are lighter than light-rail systems and can be elevated at lesser costs. These systems can also be operated automatically without any drivers.

Honey, they've shrunk the rover
Article Abstract:
The Sojourner space robot used in the Pathfinder Mars exploration project during summer 1998 was used to photograph rocks and take chemical signatures. Future space robots and vehicles are expected to become much smaller and cover more territory than the Sojourner rover. New and improved rovers will be used for Mars and other space missions scheduled on year 2001, 2003 and 2004.
