Transportation funding precarious
Article Abstract:
The transportaion appropriations bill for FY 1993 has encountered many problems in its formulation. The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act had authorized $20.5 billion for highway projects but different groups had recommended lower allocations based on their evaluations of the transport situation. Political undercurrents and violations of the 1990 budget act further compound the finalization of the appropriations bill. A House-Senate conference committee will evaluate the different proposals and give its recommendation regarding this issue.

Oakland fire fighters guided by satellites
Article Abstract:
Oakland firefighting officials used the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite data in their operations. This method helped them locate troubled areas, rescue groups and determine the perimeters of fire damaged properties. The system integrates information into digitized maps of the area which shows the exact location of critical sites and enables the fire team to reach them even without map directions. Thus, GPS enables the firefighters to plan effective ways of controlling even fires of great magnitude.
