Turning the corner
Article Abstract:
Statistics from the Gauge and Toolmakers Association show that there has been a fall in the sales of British metrology industry due to recession but an industry rebound is expected. The sales in 1990 had fallen in all sectors of metrology. There was rise in sales of industrial measuring and checking instruments in 1991. The potential applications for some optical measuring machines have not yet been fully realized. Quality of products and easy-to-use designs are being considered by engineers to improve sales.

Tooling up
Article Abstract:
The demand for machine tools is increasing throughout the world and will continue to grow. A study shows that market sales in the UK would grow from 280 in 1995 to 345 million pound sterling in 1996. The possible reason for this increase could be improvement in company finance and relatively low interest rate. Similar trends are seen in American markets. The demand for high speed machining is growing.

Mature market
Article Abstract:
A survey shows that there is surplus production of cutting tools throughout the world. The over-production has resulted in tough competition in prices and could force industry groups to consolidate. Multinationals, such as Sandvik in Sweden and Kennametal in the US, dominate the market. The survey statistics of a few companies are briefly discussed as is the UK market.
