Two versions of holography vie to show atoms in 3D
Article Abstract:
Two independent teams of researchers have achieved atomic-scale holography for the first time since physicist Dennis Gabor proposed the possibility in 1948. Physicists believe that holography will provide information about local structures of ordered solids that conventional crystallography cannot provide.

Oil-drop trap is set for a lone quark
Article Abstract:
Martin Perl at SLAC heads the last team still searching for evidence of a free quark, which has been suspected but not predicted by theory. Droplets of silicone oil falling between charged plates are recorded by a charge- coupled device video camera, and each's drop precise charge is measured.

All-in-one detectors for the faintest objects
Article Abstract:
Researchers have developed a superconducting tunnel joint that can detect photons and measure their energy across a wavelength range from the near-ultraviolet to visible spectrum. The next step will be to arrange them into arrays.
