Uncertain returns

Article Abstract:

The 1996 figures on investment level in the UK fail to give a clear picture of the real state of the economy. Data released by the Engineering Employers Federation say that engineering firms have performed well despite a slight decrease in the investment level in the first quarter of 1996. The Office for National Statistics's data presents a different picture of the economic scenario in 1995. Politically motivated efforts are being made to show that the decrease in investment level signifies efficient manufacturing practices and greater returns from previous investments in high-tech equipments.

Article Abstract:

A recent report showed that organizations in US and Europe are at varying stages in their year 2000 bug projects. The US has made the most progress spending about 30.9% of its millenium budget followed by the UK and Norway at 26.3% and 22.3%, respectively. The private sector is also ahead of the public sector with 35% of the manufacturing and 60% of finance sectors in the midst of their projects compared to only 16% of public sector organizations.
