Article Abstract:
This article discusses the recent advances in material and structural engineering that have paved way for new methods to control vibrations of structures by dissipating dynamic energy in a process called damping. Descriptions of mass dampers such as steel spheres, liquid column dampers, and reinforced-concrete structures are presented.

This article discuses the role of civil engineering and geotechnical expertise in the human settlement on Mars and the Moon. Study indicates that Martian soil or regolith coupled with the earth's geosynthetic materials will be helpful in the initial landings of the human on the planets.
