Upgrade to improve Arecibo's vision
Article Abstract:
The $26-million upgrade will make the facilities operated by Cornell's National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center (NAIC) the most powerful radar in the world. The upgrade includes a new dome that houses reflectors and that will enable astronomers to make more detailed maps of nearby astronomical objects.

Erosion study finds high price for forgotten menace
Article Abstract:
Cornell Univ researchers calculated the direct damages from soil erosion in the US to be $27 billion annually, with indirect damage amounting to $17 billion, much higher than prevailing thought. Recommendations to increase conservation programs will go over poorly with the conservative Congress.

Is the dark matter mystery solved?
Article Abstract:
Astronomers report that massive compact halo objects make up more than half of the galaxy's dark matter. The figure is twice as large as earlier estimates and suggests that all of the dark matter in the galaxy may be made of ordinary matter.
