New clues to brain dopamine control, cocaine addiction
Article Abstract:
Experiments by Marc Caron and colleagues on mice with the gene for the dopamine transporter protein disabled demonstrate the importance of the transporter in controlling dopamine levels and in drug addiction. The results may help the development of new drugs for addiction and Parkinson's disease.

Morphologists learn to live with molecular upstarts
Article Abstract:
A recent conference on systematics tried to bring together proponents of morphological and molecular genetics approaches to classification. Though the two approaches of result in similar phylogenies, molecular classification offers show relations that are not physically obvious.

NAS to lose contract for A-bomb study
Article Abstract:
The US Energy Dept removed NAS as co-administrator of the RERF, which studies the long-term effects of the atomic bomb on the people of Hiroshima, Japan. The DOE selected Columbia University as new US partner, and plans to oversee financial management itself.
