Visualizing the flow
Article Abstract:
Engineers have designed a passive air-cooled atrium for the US Courthouse and Federal Building, Phoenix, AZ, using computer-aided multidisciplinary analyses. A dynamic thermal computer model analyzes the thermal effects and predicts the features of natural ventilation in the atrium. The findings of the thermal model were subjected to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models to predict air flow and heat transfer. Many CFD models were used to put the mechanical air supply outlets at the most suitable places. The use of the computer models lowered the costs of air cooling from $1 mil to $250,000.

Hot wired
Article Abstract:
French aircraft parts manufacturer Labinal used the CRIPTE software to simulate the effects of lightning strikes on the wiring of Boeing Co's new B717-200 airplane. The software enabled engineers to assess the effects of electromagnetic surges caused by lightning strikes on various internal wires and cables. Simulation results were then used to develop line replacement unit specifications to avoid the costs of late-stage design changes.

Modeling contaminated sediments
Article Abstract:
Computer modeling analysis, and geomorphic and engineering analysis together qualitatively determine contaminated sediment transport. Calibration and verification of computer model results with respect to bathymetry and radio-chemical data yield reliable results. Lower river systems having reverse flow hydraulics and cohesive sediment calibrations give better quantitative results than those from a complex river model.
