Wastewater under home plate
Article Abstract:
The water treatment plant at Daly City, CA, faced a big problem in 1985-1986 when wastewater influx increased to unmanageable levels. Expansion on the present site was not possible, so it was decided that the adjustment would be underneath a half acre baseball park located beside the old plant. Designers studied the advantages and disadvantages of such a location, and incorporated these findings into a special design that would be effective, low-risk and well within the $15 million budget. The plant, completed in 1990, has successfully complemented the functions of the existing facility.

Article Abstract:
Wastewater, unless treated properly, will cause damage to public health and environment. Cities are examining alternatives which will alleviate its potential hazards at minimal cost and preserve the existing water supply. These include zero effluent discharge and recycling of waste water for agricultural and industrial use and converting wastewater to drinking water. The effectivity of these methods will depend on the feasibility of the treatment process, the required quality of water for its potential reuse and the area's climatic, geological and water existing conditions.

Concrete change
Article Abstract:
The production of concrete is evolving with the incorporation of recycled materials. Aside from providing cheap sources, these reused objects sometimes improve the quality of concrete. Among the materials that have been used in concrete production are plywood, plastic molds and tires. Industrial byproducts that have also been mixed into concrete include fly ash, sludge ash, silica fume, glass beads and paint particles. Other good materials are natural fibers, feathers, wastewater, waste glass and polymer concrete.
