What should engineers think about the SSC?
Article Abstract:
Engineers are playing an important role in the underground construction of the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) aimed at achieving a better understanding of the universe. However, critics question the expense of the enormous and expensive project during economically difficult times. Such critics must realize that important scientific discoveries make way for new, profitable technologies that will improve society, and that engineers, often overlooked, make important contributions to science.

Reengineering the profession
Article Abstract:
Civil engineers must realize the need to reengineer the profession in response to changes in the design and construction industry. This will include the development of a multidisciplinary approach to civil engineering education that equips students with computer, managerial and teamwork skills, continuing education and training for practicing engineers, and shifting the focus from short- to long-term goals for the profession.
