When the sun disappears and dolphins do back flips
Article Abstract:
About 1,300 professional and amateur astronomers boarded cruise ship Viking Serenade on July 8, 1991 to witness a solar eclipse that was due to occur three days later. The ship was bound for an area of sea between the Baja Peninsula and Mexico. The participants viewed the partial eclipse before the total solar eclipse with solar filters and inverted binoculars. The solar eclipse itself was a grand experience, also making the planets Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Venus visible. A bizarre event of dolphins performing acrobatics for the participants occurred after the solar eclipse.

Marine borers are back
Article Abstract:
Mollusks and crustaceans are marine borers that damage the structural integrity of the piers at harbors by destroying submerged wooden pilings and planks. Teredo, a common mollusk, bores through timber with the rotating motion of its hard mollusk shell head. However, it is incapable of attacking creosote-treated wood. Limnoria, a crustacean, nibbles at the outside edges of the timber piles and can destroy even creosote-treated wood. Underwater wrapping and encapsulation in concrete or epoxy jackets are effective ways to prevent the damage caused by the tiny organisms.
