New window glazings are being developed that may switch from clear to opaque, depending on the temperature. Such window technologies promise to help solve the perpetual problem of window size. Large windows increase the need for cooling, while small windows increase the need for light.

Fuel cells are batterylike devices that produce electricity when they are supplied with hydrogen and oxygen. Fuel cell technology was developed in 1839, revived by NASA for use in space and is now being harnessed for a variety of uses, ranging from laptop computers to automobiles.
