Whimsical software wins a prize for humanness
Article Abstract:
The first 'Tuning Test,' designed to test the thinking capacity of computers, was held at The Computer Museum in late 1991. Ten judges talked, via computer, with eight entities and tried to decided which were human and which were computer programs. The 'PC Therapist' program was judged the most human.

A 1991 supercomputer can perform 8.6 billion operations per second, with another expected to reach 300 billion by 1993. Already plans are underway to build a computer that will deliver a trillion operations per second. Development and applications are discussed.

Nature's killers help fight pests
Article Abstract:
Poisons from nature are being used to combat a variety of insects. An insecticide from the neem tree is used to fight whiteflies and other insects. The pawpaw tree yields a chemical that kills insects. These and other biopesticides are discussed.
