White House calls for mercury workshop
Article Abstract:
A meeting of three federal agencies responsible for methylmercury standards in fish has been scheduled by the White House Office of Science and Technology for the definitive standard on methylmercury. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry all have varying standards on methylmercury in fish, such as the 0.2 ppm standard of the EPA and the 1 ppm standard of the FDA. The disagreement between mercury standards is hampering state efforts at mercury control programs which is hoped to be settled at the meeting.

Mercury health standard eased by U.S. agency
Article Abstract:
The US Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry's (ATSDR) recommendation for a higher methylmercury reference dose has elicited criticisms from environmental groups. The ATSDR has proposed to raise its current methylmercury standard of 0.1 micrograms/kilogram of body weight to 0.5. Environmental groups argue that the ATSDR proposal reflects the seeming leniency by the federal government regarding exposure to toxic metals and hinders efforts to control mercury emissions.

EPA to release mercury report, reversing earlier decision
Article Abstract:
THe EPA will release a long-awaited report on mercury to Congress in Apr. 1996. The report contains estimates of the largest sources of mercury emissions to air, its effects on human health and the ecology and current pollution control technologies. The 'Mercury Study Report to Congress' is mandated by a section of the Air Act which deferred regulation of toxic air emissions from electric utilities until its completion.
