Battle lines drawn for 1997 R&D budget

Pres Clinton sent Congress a budget for 1997 that includes $73 billion for research, a 1.5% increase over the yet uncertified 1996 figure. Proposed budgets for the NIH, NSF, NASA, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and National Institute of Standards and Technology are noted.

NSF worries about its federal partners
Article Abstract:
NSF administrators are worried that budget cuts could end the contribution of other federal agencies such as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to NSF projects. Geosciences programs, which are widely spread in terms of participating agencies, are particularly vulnerable.

Clinton holds the line on R&D

The Clinton administration's proposed R&D budget includes a 4% increase in appropriations to the National Institutes of Health, a 1% reduction in the National Science Foundation's education budget and a $100 million raise in the Department of Energy's science budget.
