Dampers hold sway
Article Abstract:
Seismic dampers are increasingly being used to protect new and old buildings from earthquakes. The technology moves earthquake-related damages away from the gravity load resisting system of a building into disposable elements that are designed to dissipate energy. They come in two categories: the more popular passive type which requires no electricity and the active type which require outside power sources. The technology utilizes the concept of hysteretic behavior of a structure.

Fathoming the strength of structures
Article Abstract:
The rising demand for underwater engineering is fueled by the Federal Highway Administration's ruling that states require regular inspections of substructures of bridges over waterways. This demand has prompted firms such as Han-Padron Associates to establish its own diving division wherein professional engineers dive underwater to inspect damages such as scour, cracks and biodeterioration in wood piers.
