Year of strange events leaves standard theory unscathed: particle physics
Article Abstract:
The Standard Model survived as the prevailing theory of particle physics despite unexpected results at accelerator labs in 1996. Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) detected an unexplained energy loss in a two-photon event, giving hope to the rival supersymmetry theory, but the result could not be replicated.

Three-dimensional images are conjured in a crystal tube
Article Abstract:
Researcher Elizabeth Downing has discovered how to use lasers to trace true three-dimensional images in a cube of glass. Although in its initial phase of development, many scientists are excited about the discovery, which could be used in fields such as medicine, industrial design and air traffic control.

Adding depth to X-ray maps
Article Abstract:
Q Daniel Wang introduced a technique to add depth perception to X-ray astronomy photographs. He uses the 'x-ray shadowing' technique to determine the distance, size and nature of super-bubbles of hot plasmas in the Milky Way.
