Effects of an abilities-focused program of morning care on residents who have dementia and on caregivers
Article Abstract:
A quasi-experimental repeated-measures study has been carried out to investigate effects of an abilities-focused program of morning care on residents who have dementia and on caregivers in four nursing-home level cognitive-supports units in a geriatric care center. Three units were used as controls only. Results showed the abilities-focused program had significant effects on personal attending and calm/functional behaviors, levels of agitation and levels of overall and social function. Effects were significant on caregivers' verbal relevance and personal attending and relaxed and social/flexible behaviors.

Treating excess disability among cognitively impaired nursing home residents
Article Abstract:
A study of the treatment of excess disability among cognitively impaired nursing home residents is discussed. An abilities-oriented care program was studied. The study can be questioned from a research point of view based on risk of obtaining findings that are difficult to interpret. Changes in the ward residents might be attributable to attention paid by researchers to caregivers or additional training of caregivers. In subsequent studies similar amounts to interaction should exist between investigators and staff on both control and experimental wards. Three dilemmas that investigators of such a situation face relate to implementation of intervention by research staff vs indigenous staff; strengthening intervention intensity; choice of the appropriate unit of randomization.
