Impact of depressive symptoms on hospitalization risk in community-dwelling older persons
Article Abstract:
Depressive symptoms are discussed relative to their impact on hospitalization risk in older people in the community. A 6-month cohort study was carried out with 3,486 people older than 64 years. Depressive symptoms were found to be independently associated with a more than threefold greater risk for hospitalization among men older than 74. Differences in effects of depressive symptoms are seen across age and gender groups. Such symptoms influence overall health and medical utilization among at least the oldest men.
