The association between parkinsonism, Alzheimer's disease, and mortality: a comprehensive approach
Article Abstract:
A comprehensive approach to the association between Alzheimer's disease, parkinsonism, and mortality and its results are discussed. Participants examined in the Canadian Study of Health and Aging were subjects. Those who had parkinsonism and were older than age 65 were identified, and the impact of parkinsonism on 5-year survival found for a combined cohort with and without dementia. Stratified analysis was carried out for the subgroups with Alzheimer's disease and those without dementia. Parkinsonism was found to be significantly associated with poorer survival with or without dementia.

A clinimetric evaluation of specialized geriatric care for rural dwelling, frail older people
Article Abstract:
A clinimetric evaluation of specialized geriatric care has been carried out in Canada to look at care of rural dwelling, frail older people. To test use of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) with usual care, a randomized controlled trial with 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up was used. It was found that a Mobile Geriatric Assessment Team can target the group and perform in-home CGA to develop an intervention plan leading to clinically important benefits. Intervention did not prolong life or delay institutionalization. It has been argued that misleading conclusions come from psychometric paradigms. A clinimetric, patient-centered individualized test, Goal Attainment Scaling, was the primary outcome measure.
