Predicting episodic memory performance of very old men and women: contributions from age, depression, activity, cognitive ability, and speed
Article Abstract:
The impact of general processing speed and age on episodic memory has been studied in a group of very old adults, together with a number of other variables such as health and gender. The study is part of the Australian Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Three memory tasks were used and there appears to be only a modest amount of age-related variance. Picture memory varied most according to age. General processing speed was important in mediating memory variance related to age.

Verbal knowledge and speed of information processing as mediators of age differences in verbal fluency performance among older adults
Article Abstract:
Information processing speed affects verbal fluency in older adults. Verbal fluency appears to be well maintained in the aged, though there are some declines. Excluded letter fluency is more affected by aging than initial letter fluency. Verbal knowledge does not appear to compensate for the effects of aging, though high verbal knowledge could allow the aged to perform better than individuals with low verbal knowledge. Declines linked to aging appear to be caused by declines in the speed at which information is processed.
