Influenza outbreak detection and control measures in nursing homes in the United States
Article Abstract:
Influenza outbreak detection, prevention, and control procedures have been investigated using survey questionnaires in nursing homes in nine states to evaluate use of rapid influenza testing, influenza vaccine, and influenza antiviral medication. Outbreaks among nursing home residents were found to be able to lead to substantial morbidity and mortality when prevention measures are not rapidly put into place, but many homes were not prepared to detect or control outbreaks of influenza A. Educational programs are needed.

Tube feeding in nursing home residents with severe and irreversible cognitive impairment
Article Abstract:
A descriptive cross-sectional population-based study of 4,997 nursing home residents was undertaken to find the degree to which demographic and clinical variables are associated with use of feeding tubes in those with severe, irreversible cognitive impairment. Urban location and nonwhite race were significantly associated with tube use, suggesting decisions about tube usage are strongly influenced by nonclinical factors.
