Assessing the impact of administrative policy on use of deadly force by on- and off-duty police
Article Abstract:
Data from the Philadelphia, PA, police department between 1987 and 1992 suggest police use of deadly force is often inappropriate. Choosing pursuit or calling for assistance would in most cases have ended incidents without further violence, and officers who draw their pistols usually create violence where none is likely to occur.
