Cultural conservation of medicinal plant use in the Ozarks
Article Abstract:
The cultural preservation of folk medicine in 14 communities located in the Ozark Mountain region of Arkansas and Missouri has been explored. Six relevant socioeconomic and demographic factors have been investigated in relation to the number of times medicinal plants were used in each community. Results indicated medicinal plant use is inversely proportional to a community's dependence on commercially available drugs through a process called delocalization. As communities undergo delocalization, traditional beliefs are relinquished in favor of urban practices.
