Does migration arbitrage regional labor market differentials?
Article Abstract:
A place-to-place migration model is presented and used to examine the relationships between variations in regional economic development and migration patters in 1986-1987. Results include the findings that wage and unemployment rate differentials affect migration decisions, and support is found for an asymmetric information interpretation (with household decisions more sensitive to local labor market conditions). Regional disparities in wages can be dampened somewhat by migration, but at least for periods shorter than several years migration's direct effects will not have a great effect on unemployment rate differentials. Housing costs differences among regions may also discourage migration.

Location and the effect of demographic traits on earnings
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the location and the effect of demographic traits on earnings. The American Housing Survey for 1985-1989 estimates indicate that SMSA-level fixed effects control for unobserved locational attributes without introducing simultaneity problems. Also, the failure to control for location results in biased estimates of the impact of critical demographic properties. Results suggest that black workers and male workers tend to live in cities that are expensive relative to the locational amenities in those labor markets.
