Article Abstract:

The different perspectives on Doctors Without Borders and Doctors of the World are examined. One is the organizations' seeming preoccupation with their ideology, which consumes resources that would better be expended on direct humanitarian services. Another involves the notion of human rights witnessing, wherein the Red Cross is accused of maintaining a policy of silence about human rights violations. Still another perspective is that sociologists have neglected the social and cultural influence of doctors.

Reaction paper: medical humanitarianism and human rights; reflections on Doctors Without Borders and Doctors of the World

Article Abstract:

The two international French-based and sponsored voluntary organizations Doctors Without Borders and Doctors of the World appear to be expending too much energy grappling with their abstract ideologies, the impediments of established government or organizational sponsorship. The time, energy and effort they spend on their philosophies would be better spent helping the sick, the suffering, the starving and the dying cope with the dire conditions of war, disease, hunger and human rights violations.

Medical humanitarianism and human rights: reflections on doctors without borders and doctors of the world

Article Abstract:

The Doctors Without Borders and Doctors of the World are two international voluntary organizations that provide medical care, service and relief in the belief that these are humane manifestations of moral action. Both have been instrumental in linking medical humanitarian and human rights action in a 'sans frontierisme' movement, or one which has no social and political boundaries. In their own ways, the groups are greatly contributing to a healthier, more humane and peaceful world.
