Article Abstract:
The issue of sustainable development in the frontiers of the American Megalopolis through an analysis of the Appalachian region, the first western frontier of the United States, to which the Atlantic Megalopolis expanded its market and export capital is examined. The emerging trend synthesizing government endeavors with local initiatives for more sustainable and sound development at the community level is discussed.

The political-geographical aspects of Gottmann's urban geography to counter the problematic readings of Megapolis are highlighted. It is described that Gottmann's political and urban geography showed the continuing relevance of the great book to the emerging idea of global city-regions and the present world order of city and spaces.
