The expanding role of university patenting in the life sciences: assessing the importance of experience and connectivity
Article Abstract:
The information gleaned through network ties to industry enables well-connected institutions to develop higher impact patent portfolios. In order to acquire the benefit of such connections the experience in balancing academic and corporate priorities must be maintained to avoid the danger of 'capture' by industrial interest.

Rethinking the public sector: idiosyncrasies of biotechnology commercialization as motors of national R&D reform in Germany and Japan
Article Abstract:
The changes in rules and regulations relevant to research and development in Germany and Japan prompted by the biotechnological industry are discussed. The conventional commercialization rules and regulations of R&D are compared with those specific to biotechnology industry.

The Hungarian government's policies related to research and development are framed keeping in mind the transitional phase of the Hungarian economy. The positive effect of these policies on the relationship between universities and the industry is discussed.
