The task ahead: reconciling justice with politics
Article Abstract:
The ABA's resolution calling for a moratorium on the death penalty until the due process and fairness of its imposition is improved is not, as Congressional Republicans have argued, further evidence of the ABA's left-wing politics. The resolution received broad support that was based on the experiences of many ABA members with the injustice that is widespread in the imposition of capital punishment. The resolution spurred nationwide debate on the death penalty. ABA members must follow through on the resolution and participate in improving the criminal justice process.

Our successes and our future as the Section turns 30
Article Abstract:
Members of the American Bar Association's Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities can be proud of its accomplishments in the 30 years since its 1966 founding. It has played an important role in many of the social changes since then, from promoting equality regardless of race or gender to influencing the Supreme Court's May 1996 decision in Romer v Evans. Founded in part to address the bar's long silence on such issues, the Section offers its members a way to put into practice the ideals that drew them to the law.

A call to arms: standing firm for democratic principles
Article Abstract:
The legal profession must act to protect the US Constitution, civil rights and system of justice from attack by Congress and other bodies, and the American Bar Association (ABA) should speak out on these issues. Some members of the ABA would have the organization remain silent on these issues, but lawyers cannot remain silent on such fundamental constitutional and civil rights matters. Attorneys must respond to encroachment on the principles that are the foundation of the profession.
