Understanding decisions about child maltreatment
Article Abstract:
Research presented concerns the American child welfare system and the means by which social workers determine child abuse and neglect cases. The decision-making process is examined with regard to custody judgements, and the results suggest decision-making in serious neglect and abuse cases lacks structure and consistency.

Research presented concerns the American child welfare system and the level of consistency between social workers when making custody judgments in child abuse or neglect cases. Results suggest inconsistent application of standards, often in decisions regarding referrals to family preservation services.
