Variety and niche creation in aircraft, helicopters, motorcycles and microcomputers
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine variety and niche creation in aircraft, helicopters, motorcycles and microcomputers. Two variety measures are proposed. One is based on entropy while the other is based on Weitzman's maximum likelihood procedure. These measures are applied to the product characteristics of the four sectors. Results demonstrate that traditional niche theory cannot explain all trends observed and has to be extended to deal with the rate of change in costs as a result of technological improvements.
