A cellular analogue of operant conditioning
Article Abstract:
A study conducted on transverse hippocampal slices of masculine Sprague-Dawley rats proved that response-contingent injections of dopamine and N-0923, the selective dopamine D2 agonist, activate bursting response of individual CA1 pyramidal neurons. Glutamate injections brought down the level of burst-responses but raised the frequency of solitary spikes, while a stereoisomer of N-0923, N-0924 does not activate burst-responses. The behavioral patterns of burst-response inducing capacity of dopaminergic agents are illustrated by the experiments with hippocampal slices.

Response acquisition under targeted percentile schedules: a continuing quandary for molar models of operant behavior
Article Abstract:
A targeted percentile procedure was used to assess the number of reactions of rats to a stream of continuous left-lever presses before a right-lever press. The results highlighted the influence of local reinforcers on the behavioral responses of the models, thus magnifying the importance of quantitative models of operant behavior. Reinforcement induces changes in the behavioral responses at the local level, especially when the motivating factor is an increase in the availability of food.

Biological substrates of operant conditioning and the operant-respondent distinction
Article Abstract:
Complex behavior is best understood as the cumulative product of the action over time of relatively simple biobehavioral processes, especially selection by reinforcement. The whole response should not be identified as the functional unit of reinforcement but as a sort of infinitesimal response element or behavioral atom whose biological substrate is presumably cellular or subcellular in scale.
