Article Abstract:
Belarus's identity, whether seen as a boundary or a connecting link between East and West, is crucial in determining its economic cycle. The 1990s saw significant fluctuation in population size as well as widespread loss of hope, but faith in the future could be restored by greater internal freedom.

The mentality of kolkhoz inhabitants: research notes from the Grodno region of Belarus
Article Abstract:
Kolkhoz, a Soviet word for a collective farm, has many features of a feudal estate. This imposed system officially opposed peasants' religious faith and the worth of individual work, and the final form has managed to obscure what belongs to individuals and what belongs to the people.

Belarus has become the most evident example of resistance to democracy. Alaksandr Lukashenka was elected president in 1994 on a platform of returning to socialism, with an authoritarian regime established in 1996 resulting in socioeconomic crisis and international isolation.
