Asian-American films speak a new language of multicultural variety
Article Abstract:
The Asian-American International Film Festival has grown from being a weekend affair at the Henry Street Settlement House in 1978 to a four-week, three-borough affair in 1998. Asian Cinevision sponsored the festival which featured over 50 feature, short and documentary films from the US, Canada and Asia. The films' treatment has evolved and developed a broader approach. The movies also reflect the sentiments of young people who grew up in a multicultural setup and who are more daring in expressing their feelings.

How legal language reflects current trends
Article Abstract:
Legal language plays a major role in the growth of anti-immigrant sentiments in the US. In particular, three landmark legislative events may be considered to be the biggest contributors to this trend. The first is the Oct 1, 1888 statute passed by Congress prohibiting the reentry of thousands of Chinese laborers who had left the US. The next involves the anti-immigrant policy adopted in 1977 by the Tyler Independent District of Tyler, TX. The third is California's Proposition 187.

Language as a metaphor for equality
Article Abstract:
New immigrants are finding it harder to get well-paid jobs because of language problems. Similarly, many schools view students with this problem as uneducable and push them into special education. Consequently this has further widened the economic inequality in the country. Government should increase its efforts of enhancing bilingual educational programs by putting more emphasis on teaching English.
