Book-worms without books? Students reading comic books in the school house
Article Abstract:
The arrival of comic books in American schools in the 1930s led to a debate on their educational value and impact on children's reading habits. Some researchers and educators urged that teachers use comics as supplementary and motivational material to foster the reading habit in children and improve their vocabulary. However, another group regarded comics as harmful to children and an enemy of education. By the mid-1950s the views of this group had gained enough ground to publicly discredit the comic book industry and stop educators from considering comics as possible educational material.

Dick Tracy: the early years
Article Abstract:
Chester Gould's 'Dick Tracy' comic strip gained instant popularity after its initial appearance in 1931. Gould had created the first real detective hero, and was the first to depict crime and violence seriously and freely in a comic strip. The 'Dick Tracy' series was inspired by the gangland violence rampant in the mid-1930s and many of its characters and plots were based on real underground personalities and actual events. Its popularity was due mainly to its fast-paced and exciting narratives, as well as its allusion to economic and social issues of the times.
