Cognitive coping, history of depression, and cigarette smoking
Article Abstract:
The likelihood of succeeding in quitting smoking is lesser for people with a history of depression than for those with no such history. This was found in a study which tested a main premise of cognitive behavior therapy programs for depression, that people with a history of depression lack cognitive coping skills taught in such treatment programs. To test cognitive coping, four groups, namely, Positive vs Negative Depression History and Current Smoker vs Never Smoker, were asked to complete the Ways of Responding scale. Results indicate that people with a history of depression tend to lack cognitive coping skills.
