Demystifying disability: a review of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health
Article Abstract:
It is posited that the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) does not specify in detail claims regarding the nature of disability and impairment, which limits its capacity to adequately influence and educate its users. Suggestions for clarification are presented involving biopsychosocial theory and the implications and meanings of universalization as a directive for disability policy.

Analysis suggests that the social model of disability has general relevance for research in health and illness sociology. The model is used as a tool for generalizing fitness discourse, and is applied to physical locomotion for illustration.
