Editorial: dissociation, and cycles of abuse across generations
Article Abstract:
B. Egeland and A. Susman-Stillman sought to study the reason why some abused children escape repetition of abuse and emerge resilient while others remain stuck in a repetitious pattern. By examining the way in which victims of abuse organize, react and make sense of their experience, Egeland and Susman have found the significance of the mental process of dissociation in breaking the pattern of intergenerational abuse. They also found that survivors of child abuse were more coherent and expressive of their feelings regarding their experience compared to those who repeated the cycle.

Treatment in child sexual abuse
Article Abstract:
Studies of three different treatment approaches in child sexual abuse are described. McGain and McKinzey's work examines a group treatment approach that compares a treatment group with a waiting list group. Lanktree and Briere's study investigates an eclectic treatment program involving abuse-focused individual treatment and group, family and collateral parental treatment. Finally, Spaccarelli and Kim's study explores issues relevant to treatment providers, such as the factors that influence treatment outcomes and resilience in children.

Triage and referrals for child sexual abuse medical examinations from the sociolegal system
Article Abstract:
A panel discussion concerning the research on the triage and referrals for child sexual abuse medical examinations is presented. Physicians evaluating the abused child usually refer the victim to a special center providing adjunct care since the main purpose of the medical examination is the determination of the general health of the child. The primary care physician and medical personnel must be also trained in the provision of special care for abused victims.
