Political correctness should no longer keep responsible researchers from connecting issues of race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation with issues of crime and criminal justice. The revelations of widespread US police racial profiling in 1999 has made such research essential.

Facile misinterpretations of date that attribute decreases in violent crime to criminal justice system intervention are criticized. Decreases in the number of people aged 15 to 30 are identified as the real reason that fewer crimes are committed.
